Carol Higgins Clark

Carol Higgins Clark is an American bestselling suspense author. Carol Clark wrote over a dozen novels on her own, beginning with Decked in 1992 and several others with Christmas themes in collaboration with her mother, the mystery writer Mary Higgins Clark.

Carol Ann Higgins Clark was born in New York City. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts in 1978, she studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.

While studying at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, Carol's career path took an unexpected turn when she came to her mother's aid during a critical moment in her writing career. Mary Higgins Clark was just beginning her suspense-writing journey, and Carol bailed her out of a challenging situation by re-typing her second novel before the deadline.

This experience sparked Carol's interest in writing and gave her valuable insights into character development and plot construction.

As her mother's books gained popularity, Carol continued to support her as a sounding board, assisting with research and ensuring the authenticity of dialogue, particularly for younger characters. In 1986, when her mother's novel Where Are the Children? was adapted into a film, Carol had a minor role as a television reporter.

Over the next 28 years, she appeared in several movies, predominantly made-for-TV adaptations of her mother's books, even taking on leading roles, such as in A Cry in the Night (1992).

In 1992, Carol Higgins Clark published her debut novel, Decked, featuring the protagonist Regan Reilly, a private investigator. Regan, the daughter of a mystery writer, became the central character in most of Carol's subsequent books.

Her novels were characterized by distinctive one-word titles, such as Snagged (1993), which revolved around a pantyhose convention, and Twanged (1998), centered on a cursed fiddle. Her writing style differentiated from her mother's, as Carol infused her books with humor, providing a lighter and more comedic tone.

Carol Higgins Clark's writing career intertwined with her mother's, and they collaborated on the novel Deck the Halls (2000), bringing together Regan Reilly and Mary Higgins Clark's character, Alvirah Meehan, whom Carol brought back to life after her mother initially had her perish in her book. The collaboration between mother and daughter allowed them to create an engaging and successful series.

Apart from her writing endeavors, Carol pursued acting and used her training from the Beverly Hills Playhouse to narrate audiobooks, including her works and those of her mother. Throughout her life, Carol cherished the bond with her family, including her siblings Marilyn, Warren, and David Clark, although she mourned the loss of her sister Patricia, who passed away before her.

When asked if her mother had ever given her advice, Carol often shared her mother's suggestion: "If someone's mean to you, make them a victim in your next book."

Carol Higgins Clark died on Monday in Los Angeles due to appendix cancer. She was 66.
