John Morris

John Morris was born in 1895.He was educated at King's College, Cambridge, where he studied Anthropology. From 1915 to 1934 he served in the regular army, serving in Palestine during the first world war and later in Afghanistan, Waziristan and the North West Frontier. He also travelled extensively in Central Asia, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, Africa and the Far East, and was a member of the 1922 and 1936 Everest Expeditions. When he left the army in 1934 he studied Social Anthropology at Cambridge and in 1938 took up an appointment in Japan as Professor of English Literature at Keio University, Tokyo.He became adviser to the Japanese Department of Foreign Affairs and held the post until 1942. From 1943-52 he was head of the Far Eastern Service of the BBC and from 1952-58 was Controller of the Third Programme.
