Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong is a Canadian writer of fantasy, horror, crime, and young adult fiction. She is best known for the Women of the Otherworld series, the Darkest Powers trilogy, and the Nadia Stafford crime novels. Her books have appeared on the New York Times bestseller lists, and The Rising (2014) won the Aurora Award for Best Young Adult Novel.

Kelley Armstrong was born on 14 December 1968 in Sudbury, Ontario. Kelley grew up as the oldest of four children. She began creating stories before she could write. She later recalled that her school stories often featured "undead girls and evil dolls," although her teachers preferred more ordinary subjects.

Armstrong studied psychology at the University of Western Ontario. After graduating, she attended Fanshawe College to study computer programming. She chose the course because it gave her more time to write. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as a computer programmer. Armstrong later said, "I'm a former computer programmer, but I have escaped my corporate cubicle and hope never to return."

Her first novel, Bitten (2001), was accepted for publication in 1999. It introduced the Women of the Otherworld series, which combined supernatural fiction with mystery elements. The series later expanded to thirteen novels and several novellas. In 2014, Bitten was adapted into a television series that ran for three seasons.

Armstrong became a full-time writer in 2002 while raising her family. She later expanded into several genres. She launched the Nadia Stafford crime series with Exit Strategy (2007). She also wrote the Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising trilogies, the Cainsville and Rockton series, middle-grade novels, and standalone thrillers.

Several of Armstrong's books became New York Times bestsellers. No Humans Involved (2007) reached the hardback fiction list. The Awakening (2009) became a number-one bestseller in the children's chapter books category.

Her work has received several literary awards and nominations. The Rising (2014) won the Aurora Award for Best Young Adult Novel. A Stitch in Time (2020) won the RITA Award for Long Speculative Romance. Other books have been nominated for the International Horror Guild Award, the Sunburst Award, and the Goodreads Choice Awards.

Kelley Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, three children, and many pets.
