In 2018, her debut novel, Promising Young Women, was published and received praise for its distinct voice and compelling narrative, drawing comparisons to Sally Rooney and Rosita Sweetman.

She further explored her literary prowess with the young adult series All Our Hidden Gifts, comprising the titles All Our Hidden Gifts (2021), The Gifts That Bind Us (2022), and Every Gift a Curse (2023), with the first book making its mark as a New York Times bestseller in the young adult category.

O'Donoghue's novel The Rachel Incident (2023) explores friendship and identity, especially within the context of the LGBTQ+ community, in a heartfelt way.

I was twenty and I needed two things: to be in love and to be taken seriously.

I chose English, originally, because I liked to read. But even then what I liked most about reading was that I was good at it.

I don’t know who I was trying to impress. I did not want a boyfriend; I did want romance. I wanted passion; I did not want to be someone who was known as easy. I was desperate to be touched; I was terrified of being ruined.
