Sherlock Holmes, The Azure Veil

When Lady Amelia Voss sends an urgent telegram to Baker Street, the message is as baffling as it is chilling: her husband, Lord Elias, has been found dead in his study — door bolted from within, window latched, and clutching a length of azure silk of Indian manufacture. No intruder. No wound. Only terror frozen upon a dead man's face.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson travel to the forbidding Gothic manor of Voss Hall in Sussex, where they soon discover that Lord Elias was not the first. Two other former officers — men who served alongside him at Cawnpore during the brutal reprisals of the 1857 Indian Mutiny — have died under identical, impossible circumstances. Each was found with a length of blue silk. Each had received threatening letters signed only with the symbol of a lotus.

What begins as a locked-room mystery deepens into something far older and more dangerous: a stolen sacred emerald, the murder of an innocent priest, and a patient, decades-long pursuit of justice by those the British Empire preferred to forget. Even Mycroft Holmes, who rarely stirs from his chair at the Diogenes Club, urges his brother to tread carefully — for the Foreign Office is watching, and the truth threatens to unravel reputations that England's most powerful families have spent thirty years protecting.

As Holmes unravels the ingenious mechanism of the murders and Watson traces a mysterious Indian scholar who seems always one step ahead of them, a deeper question emerges: in a case where the killers may have justice upon their side, what is the proper verdict of a great detective?

Sherlock Holmes The Azure Veil is a richly atmospheric Victorian mystery that weaves Holmes's razor-sharp deduction with the suppressed crimes of Empire — a tale of locked rooms, slow poisons, ancient wrongs, and the long reach of the past.
