The first truth: man, by his innate nature, cannot reside in this huge world simply as an isolated and straying particle. He must establish a certain connection with this universe, guaranteeing him stability and allowing him to discern his place in the world. He needs to believe in something that will explain his environment and his place within that environment. This is a natural and conscious need, unconnected with the peculiarities of a given time or place. In the course of this research, we will discover the extent of man’s unhappiness and misery, his bewilderment and aberration, when he fails to understand the truth about that fundamental connection.

Some Crusaders and Zionists, for example, doggedly accuse Islam of being the religion of the sword, claiming that it was spread by the edge of the sword. Consequently, some of us defend Islam and refute this accusation by invoking the idea of “defence.” Thereby they lessen the value of jihad in Islam, narrow its scope, and apologise for each of its instances, claiming that they were undertaken only for the purpose of “defence,” in its present shallow meaning.

“Be not, then, faint of heart, and grieve not: for you are bound to rise high if you are [truly] believers.

If misfortune touches you, [know that] similar misfortune has touched [other] people as well; for it is by turns that We apportion unto men such days [of fortune and misfortune]: and [this] to the end that God might mark out those who have attained to faith, and choose from among you such as [with their lives] bear witness to the truth—since God does not love evildoers—and that God might render pure of all dross those who have attained to faith, and bring to nought those who deny the truth.

Do you think that you could enter paradise unless God takes cognizance of your having striven hard [in His cause], and takes cognizance of your having been patient in adversity? For, indeed, you did long for death in God’s cause before you came face to face with it; and now you have seen it with your own eyes!”

    (Al-‘Imran: 139–143)

The short life allotted such a system is a period of misery for mankind, of conflict between it and human nature and the true needs of mankind
