    So how do we begin to understand our rules? Often, the rules we set for ourselves are subconscious, so they’re not terribly easy to review. Instead of trying to figure out what rules produce emotions, we can instead start with those emotions and work backwards in order to define the rule. For example, instead of asking yourself what rules need to be satisfied in order for you to feel loved, try to recall the last time you felt loved and ask yourself how you knew it was genuine. The qualifiers you come up with are often very close to your rules.

    One great way to begin this process is to list a number of actions you feel you need to take in your life. Once you’ve done this, figure out the reasons why you haven’t taken these actions, and then ask yourself if those reasons have brought you more pain or pleasure—keeping in mind the future pain they might lead you to. Once you’ve done that, try listing all the pleasure you’ll get from completing the tasks. When you’ve done that, you’ll see that the pleasures outweigh the pains, and you’ll find yourself getting excited to tackle the challenges that lie ahead, knowing you now have the power to make the decisions you need to make
