    “Lar—LaRynn,” comes his voice. I feel the bed dip when he sits at the foot and I pull the sheet tighter around my head.

    “LaRynn. I didn’t mean to embarrass you. I just—” he sighs. “I just thought we could have a laugh, that’s all. I shouldn’t have, though.” He finds my ankle and squeezes. “Maybe I should’ve known that you wouldn’t like to be laughed at when it comes to that kind of thing. I’m sorry.”
