“Look,” I interrupt. “I appreciate that you have to sell cars. It’s your job. But I’m telling you I like this one. It suits my needs just fine, and I don’t need or want anything fancier.”

The guy looks at Jace, which irritates the hell out of me.

“And no, I don’t need to ask his permission to make this decision.”

“You’re going to be my brother-in-law.”

“Are you going to be mushy about this? Because you’re no help to me like this.”

“Good God,” Jace mutters, rubbing his fingers over his lips. “You girls shouldn’t be out alone when you’re this drunk. It’s not safe.”

“I’ve loved you for almost half my life,” I say into her hair. “But Joy, I’m in love with you.”

“I’m not getting any younger,” she says. “Would it kill you to marry this girl and make me happy?”

Joy spits out her champagne, and I just hide my face in my hand.

My hands move back to her face, and I end the kiss, resting my forehead against hers as we both catch our breath.

“I came over to talk,” I say when I can find my voice.

“That was a good conversation,” she says

“You’re not stupid, Jace. No other woman has stuck around because you always run them off. They’re not Joy.”

“I’m suspended indefinitely,” I reply, and she chokes on her water.
