She must have been much admired for her beauty in those halcyon days before she had arrived at the palace, but when she got here, she discovered she had known as much about the outside world as a frog who had spent its life in a well.

“My sincere apologies,” Maomao said. “I couldn’t think of compensation that would be worthy of you, Master Jinshi.”
Would’ve been rude to give a eunuch an invitation to a brothel, right?

Maomao was a relatively objective thinker for a girl of seventeen, but she had a few qualities that continually dogged her. For one, curiosity; and for another, a hunger for knowledge. And then there was her budding sense of justice.

It was always possible he was the current emperor’s guardian, but considering Jinshi looked to be about twenty years old, it was hard to imagine. Maybe he was the son of the Emperor or something, but then why become a eunuch?

Maomao had come to believe there was no toxin so terrifying as a woman’s smile.

The women would wear them for seven days to demonstrate their sorrow. But what caused more frowns than anything was the announcement that their serving of meat, already miserly, would be eliminated entirely for the duration.

This is a really good way of showing class differences, lol. The way these women care more about the meat than they do about the consort's son really demonstrates that, while they might show sympathy for the consort, at the end of the day, it doesn't really affect them. Their emotional connection with the consort isn't particularly strong, mainly because the consort has a higher ranking than them (not to mention the fact that the consort's meals are likely more grand than whatever they have), and because they dont know the consort on a personal level. It's sad, yes—but it doesn't really affect them. Until now, that is.
—I'm not even gonna mention the fact that wearing these black sashes are pretty much expected from the women, as a show of support and mourning for Consort Lihua, but when a similar situation would happen to someone with a lower rank, no one would bat an eye (except I just did).

    *btw I'm not villainizing anyone.

She was so busy thinking it, in fact, that she didn’t even notice the person passing by.
