Shortlisted for the International Booker prize, The Employees reshuffles a sci-fi voyage into a riotously original existential nightmare
Funny and doom-drenched, The Employees chronicles the fate of the Six-Thousand Ship. The human and humanoid crew members complain about their daily tasks in a series of staff reports and memos. When the ship takes on a number of strange objects from the planet New Discovery, the crew becomes strangely and deeply attached to them, even as tensions boil toward mutiny, especially among the humanoids.Olga Ravn's prose is chilling, crackling, exhilarating, and foreboding. The Employees probes into what makes us human, while delivering a hilariously stinging critique of life governed by the logic of productivity.

    💡Heel leerzaam

This book is strange in the best way possible. It was unexpectedly thought provoking and psychologically unnerving. What was initially portrayed as a series of statements and firsthand accounts, gradually reveals layers of philosophical and existential inquiry that persists long after the final page. Its unconventional format was also a pleasant surprise, suitably complementing the book’s theme and pushed for a more contemplative reading experience.

This collection of statements delves into the subject of existentialism and corporate objectification, all beneath the overarching question of what it truly means to be human. The interplay between the human workers and their humanoid counterparts forms a striking allegory and criticism for real-world corporate culture and its growing attitudes towards artificial/machine-driven intelligence.

Ultimately, the story’s ambiguity and surrealism left me feeling slightly unmoored. In lieu of offering clarity, it invites more uncertainty, leaving me with more questions than conclusions. Or possibly this was deliberate. I may not yet have the philosophical grounding or cognitive bandwidth to fully grapple with its less direct implications, but perhaps the answers will become apparent with time—it may be that the act of questioning is the point.

The only thing I think about now is that day. The day I experienced something that wasn’t part of the program. The day when everything was mine alone.

Maybe the humans are that very element of chaos that keeps the world alive.

Tell me, do we each have our own program or is it the same program that runs in all of us? Am I the program made manifest to itself? Am I the program’s dream of the sun? Am I one pain?
