Meet Me Halfway

Sometimes I wondered if the person who first said money can’t buy happiness ever knew what it was like to be poor.

we’d agreed to no label, no serious commitment. Sure, he’d stared down Michael when the poor man had tried to catch me alone to talk. And sure, I was pretty positive I’d cut the tongue out of any woman who tried to hit on him, but regardless. We definitely weren’t official.

“On a scale of one to ten, how creepy would it sound if I told you I came to watch you work?”
“A solid ten.”
He took a step forward. “What if I said I came to watch you work because I couldn’t stand the thought of going an entire day and night without seeing you?”
Oh God. Oh God, oh God. “That’d drop it to a six or seven, maybe,”

He was dry humping me in the middle of my living room with the lights on, against a cold door, and I could still imagine myself screaming out his name.

“No one goes into a relationship already knowing it’ll work out. That’s literally the point of dating.”

“You want to have sex with me?”
“I want to do a lot of things with you.”

“What are you doing?”
“Helping you.”
“I’m f—”
“The word ‘fine’ better not leave your mouth.”

I heard Jamie’s laughter before I heard the click of the door opening, and it was one of best sounds in the world. As much as I worried about my growing feelings for Garrett, I could never regret having an extra person give my child the time and affection he deserved.

“Can I ask you a personal question?”
“You just told me you wanted to wiener whip a lady. I think we’re past the point of needing permission to ask questions.”

“Did you know that rat poison is so effective because rodents are incapable of vomiting?”
“Huh. That makes sense I suppose.”
“Yeah, it’s kind of mean though. Did you know sloths sometimes mistake their arms as part of the tree and end up falling to their deaths?”
I darted a glance away from the road long enough to look back at him, but all I could see was his forehead hovering over the upheld animal book. “Is there a reason all these facts are about death?”
“Well, the next fact after the rats was about female koalas having more than one vagina, but I thought you’d appreciate the sloth one more.”
I blinked at the road. “Feel free to wash that out of my ears with a different fact, bud.”
“No, I think I’ll leave you with that one.”
