The Transition to Secondary School

The move to secondary school is a bigger change than many families expect. For a child who finds crowds, noise, changed routines, and multiple teachers difficult, the new school can feel less like an adventure and more like a test of survival. This book is for the parent in the final year of primary school who wants to prepare their child without pretending the new school can be made fully predictable. It starts with the night before the first visit, when the child asks, 'What if I get lost and no one notices?' and the parent has no map to offer. From there, it builds a transition plan that begins early, uses repeated low-pressure visits, and identifies one or two adults at the new school who will be the child's anchor. It also prepares the parent for the first difficult weeks, without treating every setback as proof the move was wrong. The book does not diagnose, does not promise an outcome, and does not frame the child as a problem to be fixed. It treats the child's dignity as non-negotiable and the parent's exhaustion as real.
